The Watchdog And The Thief

Image

The Watchdog and The Thief represents the interplay of character interpretation in an exhibition of dueling personalities-two artist working collaboratively and independently. By working together as well as apart, the artists’ work will represent both distinct and corresponding forces and as a result blur the divide between the individuals.

The Watchdog and the Thief (taken from the prologue of The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains) refers to the idea, originally described by Marshall McLuhan, that every new medium changes us. Our conventional response to all media, namely, that it is how they are used that counts, “is the numb stance of the technological idiot.” The content of the medium is just “the juicy piece of meat carried by the burglar to distract the watchdog of the mind.”
